Is Vision Therapy Covered by Insurance?

This is a complicated question and the answer is that it depends. Impact Vision Therapy is not a provider for any insurance company. Typically if insurance was to cover vision therapy it would the major medical insurance instead of the vision insurance plan. Our office staff is happy to assist you and your insurance company to determine what can be done to help get coverage if possible.

It may be that your insurance will pay for a portion of the initial doctor examination, and we’ll help you with the paperwork you need so that you can try to get some reimbursement. However medical insurance rarely covers this because they do not see it as a medical problem.

What problems does vision therapy improve?

Impact Vision Therapy works with children and adults who have vision problems that interfere with their ability to read, learn, comprehend, and even pay attention. Vision therapy can help patients who are dealing with reading and learning problems, ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, lack of depth perception, strabismus (eye turn), amblyopia (lazy eye), concussions, traumatic brain injury, and acquired brain inujury. In addition to those problems vision therapy can be used to improve visual performance in sports and military service.

How long does it take?

The time to complete the vision therapy program varies and is based on many different factors. Determining the length of treatment is based on the patient, patient’s learning style, diagnosis, quantity of diagnosis’, home therapy involvement, and many other factors. Through the initial evaluation and testing process an expected timeframe is determined and will be discussed during the parent/patient conference. A goal is set for the length of the vision therapy program. Throughout the programmed treatment process, progress checks are performed and the length of treatment is discussed and adjusted as needed.

What is the process to get started?

Dr. Watt has a thorough evaluation process to determine the extent of the visual problem and to ensure that vision therapy would be beneficial. Patients come from all different channels and the process may vary. An annual eye examination (ocular health evaluation and refraction) in the past 12 months is recommended but may not be necessary to begin therapy. If an exam has been performed within the past year a referral can be obtained from the doctor then records will be requested and the process started.

The Vision Therapy Process

-Initial Phone Consultation
-Visual Functional Evaluation (1 to 1 1/2 hours)
-Perceptual or Sensorimotor Evaluation (1 to 1 1/2 hours)
-Patient or Parents Conference (1 hour)

What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a series of treatment procedures prescribed by an optometrist to improve certain types of vision problems that cannot be helped with only glasses or contact lenses. Vision therapy is much akin to physical therapy for the eyes, during which vision disorders are corrected to improve the patients’ visual function and performance.
